We are proud to be selected to work with Curtin University in 2023 on the State Government’s Excellence in Explicit Teaching of Literacy initiative.
Explicit Teaching is a structured teaching process which involves a series of steps whereby the teacher clearly describes to students what will be taught in a lesson, demonstrates how to do it and concludes with a summary of what was taught and learned.
The centre provides an opportunity for teachers and principals to build, strengthen and develop their capacity to extend explicit literacy teaching practices through:
Centre schools mentor and support intern teachers as they implement explicit literacy teaching practices in their schools.
The centre builds teachers’ capacity to develop, strengthen and extend explicit literacy teaching practices in public primary schools to improve student outcomes, and provides mentoring, professional learning, advice and practical support for teachers and school leaders through an annual internship program
The program is delivered as a partnership between the centre, selected centre schools and intern schools.
The centre began in 2017 as part of the Western Australian Government’s commitment to explicit instruction teaching methods that use phonics more widely across the school system to help students improve their literacy.
